Overview
G.722.1 Audio Codec Overview
G.722.1 is an ITU-T standard wideband audio codec designed to deliver high-quality voice and audio communications at low bit rates. Commonly used in video conferencing, teleconferencing, VoIP, unified communications, and audio streaming applications, the codec provides excellent speech clarity while efficiently utilizing available network bandwidth.
The codec supports audio bandwidth from 50 Hz to 7 kHz, enabling significantly improved voice quality compared to traditional narrowband telephony. For applications requiring enhanced audio fidelity, Annex C extends the audio bandwidth to 14 kHz, delivering more natural and intelligible speech. G.722.1 operates at 24 kbps and 32 kbps, while Annex C supports operation at 48 kbps.
G.722.1 uses advanced Modulated Lapped Transform (MLT) compression technology to achieve efficient coding with low complexity and high audio quality. This makes it well-suited for bandwidth-constrained networks where clear voice communication is essential.
The standard includes several annexes that expand functionality and implementation options. Annex A defines frame packet formats and capability identifiers, Annex B specifies floating-point implementations, and Annex C extends wideband audio performance up to 14 kHz. Future enhancements under study may further increase audio bandwidth to support high-definition audio applications.
As a result, G.722.1 has become a popular choice for conferencing systems, IP communications, and multimedia applications that require a balance of audio quality, compression efficiency, and interoperability.
