GSM Speech and Audio Coding Standards for Mobile Communications

GSM-AMR: Bit rates ranging from 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s with toll quality speech starting at 7.4 kbit/s

GSM-AMR WB: Provides improved speech quality due to a wider speech bandwidth of 50–7000 Hz.

GSM-FR: Bit rate of the codec is 13 kbit/s, or 1.625 bits/audio sample.

Wideband Speech Codecs

G.722: 7 kHz audio-coding within 64 kbit/s

G.722.1: Low-complexity coding at 24 and 32 kbit/s for hands-free operation in systems with low frame loss

G.722.2: Wideband coding of speech at around 16 kbit/s using Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB)

Speex: Wide range of bit rates available (from 2 kbit/s to 44 kbit/s). Ultra-wideband mode at 32 kHz (up to 48 kHz).

Other Speech and Audio Coding Standards

iLBC: iLBC handles lost frames through graceful speech quality degradation.

MELPe: For use in many applications including secure radio devices, satellite communications, VoIP, and cellphone applications.

Opus: Opus supports constant and variable bitrate encoding from 6 kbit/s to 510 kbit/s, frame sizes from 2.5 ms to 60 ms, and five sampling rates from 8 kHz (with 4 kHz bandwidth) to 48 kHz.

Speex: Narrowband (8 kHz), wideband (16 kHz), and ultra-wideband (32 kHz) compression in the same bitstream.
